Modern transport depends on the products manufactured
from aromatics, whether we are talking about cars, lorries, aircraft
or urban public transport. This is so true that, should you remove
all the components of your car made from aromatics-based products,
you might no longer be able to drive it!
Let's focus on the mode of transport on which we most rely, then:
the car. Body, bumpers, lighting, dashboard, seats, upholstery,
fuel systems, under-the-bonnet components are generally all made
from products derived from
aromatics.
And this is not only because the automotive industry find them easy
to process, and can consequently reduce the assembly time –
and hence the costs. The weight savings achieved through the use
of these products means that the environmental impact of driving
is reduced drastically. As a car is now much lighter than it used
to be, fuel consumption is cut by, on average, 750 litres (150 gallons)
over a life span of 150,000 km (95,000 miles)!
Synthetic rubbers,
also derived from aromatics, gives tyres better road-hugging ability,
especially on wet roads. They also increase tyre mileage, which
means they have to be replaced less often.
Aromatics-derived products are key to meeting the demands of modern
motorists, who want high performance cars, improved reliability
and safety, style, competitive pricing and, increasingly, reassurance
about environmental impact.
